Thanks, Gratitude, and Happiness
There is a brief health update at the end of this message. ===================================== Registration is now open for the 2010 CALVIN SYMPOSIUM ON WORSHIP, January 28-30, 2010, in Grand Rapids. Presenters include Jeremy Begbie, Marva Dawn, Keith and Kristyn Getty, Lester Ruth, John Witvliet, and many others. http://www.calvin.edu/worship/sympos/2010 ===================================== Todays WORSHIP QUOTE is chosen to help us remember that gratitude and thanksgiving must be directed towards the giver. English essayist G. K. Chesterton points at the absurdity of only "looking within" for meaning and significance. THANKS, GRATITUDE, AND HAPPINESS I do not, in my personal capacity, believe that a baby gets his best physical food by sucking his thumb; nor that a man gets his best moral food by sucking his soul, and denying its dependence on God or other good things. I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. -- G. K Chesterton (1874-1936), A SHORT HISTORY OF ENGLAND, Chapter Six, "The Age of the Crusades," 1917. This book is free as an ebook at www.gutenberg.org. The long-awaited PET scan was on November 18. The doctor called the next day to report that the lymphoma was growing again and that we needed to move quickly. Treatment began yesterday, November 23, and I am now in the hospital until Sunday. I am receiving a series of chemotherapy treatments that will hopefully prepare my body for an allogeneic stem cell transplant (with a well-matched donor) in a few months. We continue to fight the disease, trusting in a God who is both great and good. Your concern and prayers are precious to us.
