Answer: Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. — Question #1 in the Westminster Shorter Catechism, 1647. The Westminster Assembly was called together by the English Parliament in 1643 to advise that governing body in restructuring the Church of England according to Puritan convictions. The gathering included 121 ministers, 10 members of the House of Lords, 20 of the House of Commons, plus 8 nonvoting representatives from the Church of Scotland.
