The Worship Quote of the Week for (07/24/2007):

"God Moves in a Mysterious Way"
Today's WORSHIP QUOTE is a wonderful hymn text that dates from the year 1774. The poet testifies to the truth of Scripture: God's amazing sovereignty and ultimate goodness for his children are on display, although sometimes unseen or unappreciated because of our "blind unbelief" or the "clouds we so much dread." Read on. Read it out loud. [For a wonderful modern version of this hymn, see the note below.]

"God Moves in a Mysterious Way"

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

óWilliam Cowper (1731-1800) from John Newton's TWENTY-SIX LETTERS ON RELIGIOUS SUBJECTS, TO WHICH ARE ADDED HYMNS &c., 1774; www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/g/m/gmovesmw.htm

[Last Sunday at our church we used Bob Kauflin's modern version of this great Cowper hymn (pronounced "Coo-per"). A free lead sheet and audio sample of "God Moves" is available at www.sovereigngracestore.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=M4130-12-51. I commend it to you and your church.]

Have a great week!
And please pray for my healing.
